  • Pugneys Country Park [add link https://experiencewakefield.co.uk/venue/pugneys-country-park/ ] – 15 minutes - Take a stroll along the lakeside path, take a ride on the Pugneys Light Railway (available on selected weekends – pugneyslightrailway.co.uk) or make the short walk up the hill to Sandal Castle and see how picturesque the country park looks from above. Cafe. Parking.
  • Newmillerdam Country Park [add link https://www.wakefield.gov.uk/parks-and-countryside/parks/newmillerdam-country-park  ] – 15 minutes- is a large woodland 3.5 miles south of Wakefield on the A61 (Barnsley Road). It has a central lake surrounded by a path, and there's an old railway line called the Chevet branch line linking to the wider countryside. The country park was once part of an estate which was owned by the Pilkington family. In the 1870s the family built nine lodges to house the gamekeepers who protected the site from poachers. Two lodges can still be seen today guarding the Dam.
  • Langsett Reservoir [https://www.yorkshirewater.com/things-to-do/reservoirs/langsett-reservoir/ ]- 15 minutes - sits at the northeastern edge of the Peak District National Park, less than 5 miles southwest of Penistone. Walking routes weave through majestic woodlands, offer stunning vistas across the water and boast breathtaking views from a higher vantage point on Midhope Moors. Bird watchers may spot interesting species including treecreepers, owls and woodpeckers.

You will discover a range of public art like beautifully crafted benches, willow sculptures and intricately designed bird hides.  At the heart of the Country Park is a 60-acre reservoir, a perfect spot for anglers and bird watchers.
  • Penistone Line - 10 minutes – offers stunning countryside with woodlands, heritage and historic architecture, landscapes with far-reaching views, await discovery on the doorstep of the Penistone Line. The Trans Pennine Trail caters for walkers, cyclists and horse riders and links the North and Irish seas. It forms part of the European walking route E8 and is part of the National Cycle Network as Route 62.
