Welcome to The Cottage, The Cross, Silkstone, South Yorkshire, a stone built, detached self-catering cottage nestled within the Pennines and only a short distance from the Waggon Way, Husker pit, Pot House Hamlet, and the beautiful Trans Pennine Trail.

This historic Old Tommy Shop, now known as The Cottage, has a story with roots in South Yorkshire’s mining heritage. It was the place where wages were paid to miners and workmen. The men were then expected to lay out a part of their money for the good of the shop. Tommy means bread or a penny roll, or the food taken by a workman in his handkerchief; it also means goods in lieu of money.

The Cottage has previously been used as a family home and a doctor’s surgery but has now been lovingly refurbished by its local owner into a cosy, eclectic holiday cottage for families, friends, walkers, dog walkers, and cyclists. And people who are looking to explore and enjoy a Yorkshire leisure break with local food and beer, in the surroundings of a picturesque countryside village.

This was a new location for me for a short break and really opened my eyes to this area of Yorkshire.

The cottage is ideally situated for accessing a wide variety of places. We enjoyed retail therapy at Meadowhall, local walks around Silkstone and a day out in the Peak District after a short drive around the outskirts of Sheffield.

The cottage was comfortable and had everything you could want or need and was quiet and cosy.

Will be booking again to explore further.
