Cycle Breaks in South Yorkshire

  • Chatsworth Farmyard and Adventure Playground – 40 minutes - in the farmyard you can meet our friendly animals, from pigs and horses to mischievous goats and guinea pigs, many of whom you can feed, pet or even cuddle. There are rare breeds including Suffolk Punch horses, Shire horses, Albion cattle, Gloucestershire Old Spot pigs, Golden Guernsey goats, Derbyshire Red Cap chickens and more. From the farmyard, take the secret tunnel to the woodland playground for exciting adventures.
Climb tall towers for a bird's eye view, descend at speed on racing slides, scramble across the wood tangle, zip on the zip wire, dig in the giant sand pit or use an Archimedes screw to fetch water from the stream...there are hours of adventures in store.
  • Magna Science Adventure Centre – 15 minutes - is set in the former Templeborough steelworks in South Yorkshire. It is a vast building, a third of a mile long and 150 feet high. Four pavilions house over 100 hands-on exhibits themed on Air, Earth, Fire and Water, the ‘elements’ needed for making steel, where you can discover science, technology and the region’s industrial heritage. The spectacular Big Melt Show re-creates the story of the steelworks and fabulous outdoor play facilities make for a great day out.
  • Whistle Stop Valley - 20 minutes - a journey on one of our steam trains through the glorious countryside and ancient woodlands, and through the longest tunnel on any 15-inch Railway in Britain! With one of Whistlestop Valley’s Big Adventure tickets, visitors can travel in beautiful hand-painted wooden carriages behind one of Yorkshire's Great Little Steam Trains on the 15-inch narrow gauge Kirklees Light Railway. Playground. Indoor play. Cafe.
  • Wigfield Farm – 20 minutes – a delightful open farm and college teaching centre. Animal Experiences at Wigfield Farm offer the chance to get close to animals including meerkats, reptiles and goats. Enjoy exclusive, hands-on time with your favourite animals, guided by our knowledgeable and friendly team. Whether you’re feeding, grooming or learning fascinating facts about their personalities and care.
  • Sheep-themed Art Trail - 5 minutes - a fun art project rooted in the heritage of Penistone, where sheep sales have been held for hundreds of years. In fact, the white-faced woodland breed is also known as Penistone sheep. The flock includes:
    • A sheep clutching a carton of popcorn, who stands outside the Penistone Paramount Cinema on Shrewsbury Road
    • A cycling sheep on the Trans-Pennine Trail at Penistone Showground
    • A football kit-wearing sheep at Penistone Church Football Club on Church View Road
    • A travelling sheep with a suitcase near Penistone Railway Station off Eastfield Avenue
    • A bookworm sheep outside Penistone Library on High Street
    • A roller-skating sheep at Penistone Leisure Centre on Thurlstone Road
    • Five benches in the form of "grazing" sheep - two outside the Market Hall and three at the playground off Schole Avenue.

If you spot a sheep around town, why not share a selfie on social media using the hashtag #PenistoneSheep?
